The Assessment

I carry out face-to-face assessments at my home in South Buckinghamshire. I am willing to travel to schools within the area shown on the map. Please contact me for further details and travel costs

Screening Assessment

This is a shorter assessment that incorporates an online screener and tests to assess attainment in Maths and number sense. It will also involve the collection of some background information and investigate the possible presence of maths anxiety. The screener is not a full diagnostic assessment. Its purpose is to identify whether the difficulties an individual is experiencing may be associated with dyscalculia and require further investigation. The results from the screener are not intended to give firm evidence that dyscalculia is identified, but rather give an indication whether a full assessment would be worthwhile.

This assessment takes approximately 2 hours.

Full Diagnostic Assessment for Dyscalculia

Once you have booked an assessment, I will send you some questionnaires, to help me gather information about your assessment needs. These questionnaires, for you, school/workplace and family will need to be returned to me at least two weeks before the assessment.

The assessment comprises several short activities, assessing a wide range of skills and abilities tests, which have previously been described by pupils as, ‘quite fun and not like maths’.  Other factors which may impact on maths-related learning difficulties are also explored as part of the assessment e.g. medical history, environmental factors, educational opportunities, speech and language skills etc.

It is also necessary to carry out additional assessments relating to literacy skills and phonological awareness, to try to ascertain whether another specific learning difficulty (e.g. dyslexia) may be impacting the Maths. Due to the number of tests being completed it may take between three and four hours to complete the whole process.

The tests will include:

  • Dyscalculia online screener
  • Cognitive ability assessments (verbal / non-verbal / visual abilities)
  • Tests of memory – including working memory
  • Maths calculation assessments – to include qualitative observations
  • Maths reasoning tasks
  • Numeracy/operational skills assessments
  • Worded maths problem tasks
  • Speed of recall test

Throughout the assessment tasks, the individual’s ‘sense of number’ will become evident. Sense of number is a key factor in identifying dyscalculia as a specific learning difficulty. As with any other diagnostic assessment, the assessment may conclude that the criteria for identification of dyscalculia have not been satisfied. However, recommendations for further support and intervention will be provided in the report.

This assessment takes between 3 and 4 hours, depending on the person, with rest breaks as needed.

It is important to note that a specific difficulty may not be identified. However, a full report, containing recommendations and strategies, is always provided.
